Growing Up in the Age of Sex and the City

Growing up in the age of Sex and the City, I became obsessed with two things: designer shoes and romance comedies. The first thing I did when I graduated college and got my first sales job was buy designer shoes. I remember the joy of slipping my first pair of Jimmy Choos on my feet. And I swear that I heard angels singing when I walked into the Louboutin store for the first time. It was a religious experience for me. As my commission checks got larger, I filled my closet with the most beautiful shoes. Of course, I had to buy a couple pairs of Manolo Blahniks as a nod to Carrie Bradshaw. But I’ll admit that they are not my favorites.

While I may not have agreed with her taste in shoes, I loved the show and watched every episode of Sex and the City at least four times. Yet, when I sat down to write my romantic comedy series, there was something I wanted to address that I felt lacking in previous series…the male perspective.

Just like most romantic comedies, Sex and the City spends all its time focused on the women and their thoughts about relationships and men. In my book series that starts with Laughing All the Way to the Bank and Our Season of Madness, we have scenes with the male characters talking about what they think. It shows you that there are always two sides to every story. I give the reader insight into the female and male perspective.

Personally, I have enjoyed developing the male and female characters to create a complete story. I have heard from men and women that they have enjoyed the story because it is very balanced between the female and male characters. I took what I loved about Sex and the City and made it better by including the male perspective.
